The 2008 CSL Awards Gala is the most prestigious award ceremony ever organized to honor outstanding Sri Lankans in Canada.

About 500 people are expected to attend the gala event and a number of dignitaries will be there to present the awards.

The event is organized with the support of the Sri Lanka High Commission.

SPECIAL GUEST OF THE NIGHT: THE HON. ARJUNA RANATUNGA, MP

The Honorable Arjuna Ranatunga, MP is the legendary captain of the Sri Lanka national cricket team. And just recently, he has been appointed as Chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). A left-handed batsman and useful right arm bowler, he made his first-class debut in 1981 at the age of 18 and a year later played in Sri Lanka's inaugural Test match. He went on to score Sri Lanka's first half century in this game.

He then went on to captain Sri Lanka in 1988, taking control of the national team for the next 11 years through one of its most successful periods. He was widely recognized as a master tactician and was famous for defending his players at all costs.

In 1996, Sri Lanka defeated Australia in the Cricket World Cup under the captaincy of Ranatunga. This was pivotal because this gave Sri Lanka a big honor on the world cricket stage.

Mr. Ranatunga retired in 2001, but he entered into politics and later on became the Deputy Minister of Tourism for Sri Lanka.

THE CSL AWARD TROPHY

The trophy that the awardees will receive is handmade by the well-known craftsmen from the tiny village of Kalapura. This elegant trophy has a unique design and is no ordinary trophy - it is an emblem of pride and honor of being an outstanding Sri Lankan here in Canada.

By allowing the craftsmen from Kalapura to create our trophy, we are putting money back into Sri Lanka and uplifting the villagers of Kalapura.

AWARD TICKETS

Tickets are at $85 each and includes the following:
   - Hors d'oeuvres at the cocktail reception
   - Sumptuous dinner buffet
   - Entrance to the prestigious award ceremony
   - A chance to take photos with Arjuna!

PROGRAMME

Please arrive early. Cocktails start at 6:00pm while the dinner buffet is from 7:00-9:00pm. Buffet will be cleared at 9:00pm sharp.

ATTIRE: Formal. Gentlemen, wear your suits. Ladies, be glamorous! This is your night.

THE JUDGES

The distinguished Board of Judges consists of an independent body who are distinguished non-Sri Lankan businessmen and professionals. The Sri Lanka High Commission and the CSL Awards association partners will act as the Advisors.
